The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism operates a web site to promote their South Carolina Trails program, which provides information on hundreds of scenic trails throughout the state.  They also provide links to various organizations that are involved in outdoorsy activities and environmental preservation.  If you go to their Links page, you’ll find a link to our site!  Do you know of any other web sites where we can link up?  Send a chicken message to Tom or Louise so we can spread the word about all the great things we have to offer!

What Happened?

Here's what your fellow COLA Club members had to say about some of the events last month:

Lunch at Al-Amir

Well the weather was like in Belgium: rain so we had lunch inside. Louise had to be helped when it came to ordering.  Raki coaxed us in a Damascus bread that everyone liked.  It was fun!  Oh yeah, Elliot, it was really really really great.  Loved the food, company and the atmosphere was really nice! It was a delightful afternoon.

Art Bar Players

This was a really cool event. It was a comedy improvisation -- a lot like `Whose Line Is It Anyway?` We should do this event again in a few months. A few of us made it over to Crocodile Rocks, but truthfully it was a bit of a letdown after the hilarity of the ABP. They rely heavily on audience participation, and Elliot, Jim, Kathy, and Debbie made significant contributions. Remember...somewhere in Europe, there’s a village missing its idiot.

Indian Cooking

Yummy! Delicious! Tasty! Savory! And lots of other adjectives!  Sabine has done it again; she gets everyone involved in the cooking and, makes it all seem to simple and fun. And Jean-Louis makes sure we all have the perfect wine or beer for the meal. And before the meal. And after the meal. And he let Tom supervise, which was just a weasely way for Tom to get out of cooking, but we all pretended to take it seriously.  It was a wonderful evening and I want to thank Sabine and Jean-Louis for opening their lovely home and pool to the Cola Club again.

Owl Prowl

The Owl Prowl last night was a wonderful experience. Be very sorry you missed it. We started out by hearing baby Barred owls, they chimed in during the talk on bats...apparently they were jealous! As we walked toward the river, the park ranger stopped to point out a snake, pawpaw trees, one of the record breaking loblolly pines at Congaree National Park, and cypress knees. The whole time the baby barred owls called, and our talented ranger called back, imitating a adult. The babies closed in, until one was in a tree right by the path; but he was too high up for us to see him. Finally an adult started calling, too. It was amazing how accurately the ranger was imitating that call! On the way back it was hard to tell who was whooing - the ranger or the owl. The fireflies provided a light show the entire time, and we even saw foxfire!  What a wonderful way to spend an evening.  The lightning display on the drive home was pretty wild too! Man, did we get lucky on our timing of the outing given the downpour and storm later!

Events on Tap

It's hard to say what's hotter, the weather or The COLA Club!  Check out the web site for these and other fantastic events.

Backpacking/Camping

Fri, 6/18/2004 5:00PM

Come join us for another adventure in the Black Balsam Knob area of Pisgah National Forest of NC. Last year we had a great time. Beautiful views. We will meet at 5:00pm (times may be adjusted to accommodate people)Friday at the parking area and hike in. It is approx one mile up to the summit, but well worth it. Black Balsam is the highest point around with a 360 degree view from your tent. Do not worry if you're not a backpacker. Need gear - ask. You must pack your own food and water. Day hikes are optional.  This event was rescheduled from 6/11/04.

Floatilla

Sun, 6/20/2004 1:30PM

Come and join in the 'Float' down the Saluda River. We meet at the Riverbanks Zoo, carpool to the 'put-in' and float down to where we parked. Bring food and drinks. You can float down in or on anything you want!! This is a lot of FUN! Remember sunscreen!

Grandfather Mountain Highland Games

Thu, 7/8/2004 12:00PM

This is the annual gathering of Scottish Clans at the Grandfather Mountain campsite. You don't have to be Scottish, just have drunk scotch or listened to Scottish music once in your life, or can identify Scotland on a map to attend.  See ya there and look for planning meetings.

An Adult Evening With Shel Silverstein

Fri, 7/9/2004 10:45PM

We all remember his stories growing up, like "Where The Sidewalk Ends", but Shel Silverstein had an adult side to his work that isn't as well known today. Come check out his works at Trustus Theatre!

Skydiving

Sat, 7/17/2004 10:30AM

Make your first jump a 120 MPH freefall TANDEM skydive! The classroom instruction takes approximately 30 minutes. When it is your turn to jump, you and your instructor board the aircraft together for the ride to altitude. After reaching the desired altitude, it is time to freefall with your instructor attached behind you as your personal guide. You will accelerate to over 120 miles per hour for up to 60 seconds. Then you can pull the ripcord and enjoy a breath taking five minute flight under your parachute built for two. Yes, these parachutes truly fly and you get to assist your instructor in steering.
